Salem Hamdiah (Socotra, Yemen)

Salem holds an MSc in Forestry from Mendel University in Brno, Czech Republic, and is currently finalizing his PhD studies at Ljubljana University, Slovenia. His research is centered on Frankincense trees within the Socotra Archipelago, with a focus on their spatial distribution, seed germination, and conservation status.

With a rich background, Salem served as a local expert in Sustainable Land Management on Socotra Island for a United Nations Environment Programme project from 2016 to 2017. During this time, he shared his expertise with international experts and local communities, aiming to conserve plants and rehabilitate endangered species in home gardens and forests.

Since December 2019, Salem has been the Scientific Coordinator of the local expert team for the Foundation Franklinia project, which aims to conserve endangered endemic Boswellia trees on Socotra Island. His responsibilities include monitoring Boswellia and Commiphora species, as well as conducting awareness activities for local communities to promote environmental protection and reduce the impacts of overgrazing.

Furthermore, Salem holds the position of Chairperson at the Socotra Society for the Conservation of Endangered Flora, showcasing his dedication to the preservation of Socotra's unique and endangered plant species.
